HISTORY AT KAZANLAK VALLLEY, BULGARIA

THRACIAN GOLD --

4TH TO 3RD CENTURY BC
The Thracian history of the Kazanlan Valley is so rich and there are enormous historical evidences of settlements in the region during the Neolithic times. The land on the upper course of the Tundzha River contains land that was occupied by Sleuthess III, King of the Thracian. The Thracian town of Seuthopolis was excavated and preserved during the construction of the Koprica Dam. It has shown that quite a large Thracian population inhabited the area, reaching its peak around the 5th - 3rd centuries BC.

THRACIAN TOMB

For people who are interested in the history of the Thracian, a Thracian Tomb was discovered in the northern part of the Thracian Park. It dates back to the 4th or early 3rd century BC. The tomb contains a completely preserved painting of early Hellenistic art. The delicate frescoes are protected by a special protection structure built over the tomb. It is so valuable that only researchers are allowed to enter the tomb but don't get disheartened there is a replica only 50 m to the east open for visitors.

Near Kazanlak a further 10 Thracian tombs and mausoleums have been discovered. Ostrousha, 2 km south of Shipka is the largest with an unbelievable 100 sq m. It has four halls, one round and three rectangular, and a chamber resembling a sarcophagus. The tomb contains relics and paintings of people and animals. It could date back to the 5th century BC. As I said before it is unbelievable.
Golyama Arsenalka, near the Sheinovo village, has a tomb with two chambers and an impressive facade. In front of the tomb lies a stone sarcophagus and a stone grave from neighbouring mounds. Closed by they found gold treasures. The tomb dates back to the 4th century BC.

When I saw all these articles made in gold I couldn't believe they were made at that time. We were always given the impression that people at that time were just hunters and gatherers apart from the Greeks, Egyptian and later on the Romans. If you see these exhibits you'll be stunt. At least I was. The Thracian must have been very advanced in their knowledge and skills..
The Kazanlak Valley lies in the middle of Bulgaria on route from Sofia to Burgas. It is one of the most beautiful valley in Bulgaria.
